Lesley Nolan works from her studio nestled in the trees of her backyard in Tallahassee, Florida which has allowed her to raise her family and work from home. She began working with kilnformed glass in 1991. Nolan created and taught the fusing class at the Florida State University Student Art Center and taught at the FSU Master Craftsmen Studio. Nolan’s work is included in Contemporary Fused Glass by Bran Walker, and her work is represented in public, corporate and private collection throughout the United States.
Strip Construction
"I cut ¼” strips of glass and turn them on their sided. It takes 7-8 strips per inch. The longer the strip the more difficult. These pieces are laid up in the kiln and are dammed around the edges to minimize movement as they fuse together. Twelve hours later they are ready for the next step.”
“I smooth the edges using a wet diamond angel grinder. Then I sandblast the piece which through the next step will crate the satin finish.”
“The next firing is for the “slumping. This is at a cooler temperature in the kiln; the piece is placed on a mold and fired for another 12 hours depending on the size of piece. The piece “slumps” into the mold.”
“In the initial firing I often include prefired elements such as the leaves, insets of broken and crushed glass or other patterns that may have been created by silk screening powdered glass.”
All of the work is food safe.
