Barbara Balzer is a national award-winning artist who has exhibited at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Brevard Art Museum and the Florida State University Fine Art Gallery and Museum. Her work is included in many collections and fine art galleries through out the southeast. She is the recipient of two State of Florida Artist Enhancement Grants.
While at the University of Iowa as a European Literature and Thought major she enrolled in a ceramics course and has been transfixed by the materiality of clay and what it can do ever since. While attending the MFA Program at the Florida State University College of Dance and Visual Arts Balzer continued to investigate the human form in clay, considering herself one in a long line of figurative sculptors beginning with the humble potters of 30,000 years ago who created the Venus of Willendorf.
As a studio artist residing in Tallahassee, she continues her struggle with the human form, always in service of an idea.
